Christmas Markets – November 9th
The festive season countdown isn’t complete without a visit to the traditional Christmas markets. The Christmas Markets are held at George/St Enoch Square and offer a wide selection of festive gifts and delicious street food from individual vendors. A welcoming bar is available for customers to use and offers both food and beverages for all to enjoy.
Christmas Light Switch On – November 18th
Every year, George Square in Glasgow City Centre lights up around mid-November in preparation for the festivities leading up to December 25th. For many locals, this is when Christmas truly begins and attending the event is often viewed as an annual family tradition. With over 14,000 tickets issued in a ballot system for the event, it really does bring crowds of Glaswegians to the area to witness the ‘Switch On’.
Style Mile Carnival – November 25th
The Style Mile Carnival brings music, dance and spectacle to the heart of Glasgow. ‘Festive Fairy Tale’ is the theme this year and we can’t wait to see what the Carnival has in store. Expect some thrilling costumes and extravagant festive performances. The Carnival will leave from St Enoch Square and will parade around the City finishing up at the George Square Christmas Markets.
Blessing of the Crib – December 5th
The traditional ‘Blessing of the Crib’ takes place in George Square beneath the Christmas Lights to a chorus of singers. The event is free and is a beautiful event to attend with the family. Starting at 6:30pm, you will be able to visit the Christmas Markets before and experience the Blessing afterwards.
Santa Dash – December 9th
Over 8,000 Santas took part in the 5k race last year to raise money for Beatson Cancer Charity. The race leads through the main streets of Glasgow and participants are encouraged to dress as Santa to take part. Again, much like all of the other festive activities, the event will both start and end at George Square.
Pantomime Season – December 2018
Attending a Christmas pantomime in Glasgow has been a long tradition developed through many generations. For many families, it is considered to be an annual family event where traditional fairy tales such as Aladdin and Cinderella are performed with a Christmas twist to spread the festive cheer. The Kings Theatre, Pavilion and Armadillo are the three biggest venues hosting Christmas pantomimes each year.
