LOCATION [ map ]
Glasgow Green is just a short walk away from the apartment along Lanark Street.
The oldest of the city parks, The Green was gifted to the people of Glasgow by Bishop Turnbull in 1450. Initially it was used for washing, bleaching linen, grazing, drying fishing nets and for swimming in the River Clyde. Today it is the venue for a number of events every year, including the World Pipe Band Championships.
Other attractions on The Green include the People's Palace and Winter Gardens, where you can learn about Glasgow's social history and follow it with a visit to the café in the sumptuous Victorian glasshouse with its array of tropical plants. Great on a cold, wet day, but just as good when the sun shines!
Outside the People's Palace is the recently restored Doulton Fountain, the largest terracotta fountain in the world. Of more interest to the younger members of the family is the children's play village located on the green. There is also a toddler's play area.

The apartments are just 200 metres from Glasgow Cross, and beyond that is the Merchant City and City Centre. Trongate has been part of the Merchant City regeneration programme in recent years and is home to some trendy restaurants and bars as well as a wide selection of shops. The Tron Theatre has an excellent reputation for showing innovative theatre, and is now a thriving multi-faceted arts venue, home to the award-winning Tron Theatre Company and host to the very best of British and International touring productions. |

The Merchant City, whose magnificent buildings have been lovingly restored in recent years, is Glasgow at its most vibrant and cultured. Sophisticated and up-market shops, restaurants, bars and clubs mingle with grand architecture and art collections. Fashion jostles with big business here and the coolest of Glasgow folk can be found whiling away days and nights with coffee or whisky (or both) in hand, within strolling distance of the flat, at a pavement café or in a glitzy bar. Beyond the Merchant City is the City Centre where you will find shops a-plenty if it's retail therapy you are after. Glasgow is the UK's second largest shopping centre after London, and is still growing. Both Buchanan Galleries and St Enoch Shopping Centre are currently being expanded, and Buchanan Street which links them is also lined with shops, bars and restaurants. Argyle Street and Sauchiehall Street are the other main shopping streets. |
