LOCATION
The most desirable residential area of Glasgow, the West End is favoured by Scottish stars of stage and screen. Familiar faces are regularly to be spotted around the area. The area began to be developed in 1840, following the completion of the Great Western Road which for the first time linked the city with the rural areas beyond. In order to attract the moneyed merchants of Glasgow to the West End, houses were designed and built by the most illustrious architects of the day, including such notables as Alexander 'Greek' Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
As a result, much of the West End is now a conservation area, and enjoyable hours can be spent just wandering the streets admiring the magnificent architecture.

Kelvingrove

Kelvingrove

One of the most striking buildings is the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, recently re-opened after a multi-million pound refurbishment, and now Scotland's number one tourist attraction, knocking Edinburgh Castle off its long-standing top spot.

Byres Road is the hub of West End life, packed with interesting shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Ashton Lane is a delightful cobbled street lined with restaurants and bars and the small but beautifully proportioned Grosvenor Cinema which shows the latest releases. J K Rowling is reputed to have based Diagon Alley on Ashton Lane, so it's a must-visit for Harry Potter fans.

Ashton Lane

Kibble Palace dome

Glasgow University off Byres Road is another magnificent building, and its student population has more than a little to do with the area's well-deserved reputation for being lively and trendy.

Not for nothing is Glasgow know as the 'Dear Green Place'. The city is full of trees and open spaces, one of the largest of which is the Botanic Gardens off the Great Western Road at the bottom of Byres Road. The magnificent newly-restored Kibble Palace glasshouse in the gardens is well worth a look.
